In Memory of ValleyDictorian “Riku” (Genuine Monarch x Pans Valentyna)

Riku is the reason we have Sunrise Oak Farm. Riku was Heidi’s first horse, a gift from her father for completing Veterinary School and an opportunity to complete at endurance. As a team they enjoyed many miles on the trail conditioning and getting to know each other. Riku was an excellent endurance competitor, and carried Heidi through many of her endurance rides. They were a solid team, consistent top finishers, many Top Tens and even a Best Condition.

Riku was truly an amazing horse, both in stamina and as a family member.

Wrapping up the 2015 season with 4 solid race performances, Riku and Heidi wanted to race at the AERC Nationals. During the race something went terribly wrong on the second leg. After surgical attempts to save him, his colic was too severe. Riku cantered off to Valhalla in the lush fields of Virginia Tech’s Vet School.

Riku is missed terribly. He was a friend to all-- horses, humans, dogs, cats, chickens alike. The pastures are not the same without him.
